RPW Exclusive: Not The Way He Would Have Wanted, But Ron Silk Takes Whelen Mod Win At NHMS

Column By: BRITTANY NUTILE / RPW – LOUDON, NH – Back once again. Ron Silk took the checkered flag to win the Eastern Propane and Oil 100 Whelen Modified Tour race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

It was a shortened race where they waved the checkered flag still under caution (red flag), where the track crew was fixing the track because a car backed into the safer barrier in turn 1. It was a crazy, exciting race with few cautions and lots of passing both bottom and top grooves. Silk started the race in 13th. It’s disappointing to have it end that way, I’ve finished 2nd here years ago when the race got shortened. I would have like to have everyone see how the end would have played out. I’m happy we won, we raced really hard all race and Doug was good, Chase was good, McKennedy was good at the end so, certainly no guarantee that I would have won but, we were leading at the right time.” Silk talks about his race and just the disappointment of not completing the full 100 lap race.

Doug Coby finished the race in 2nd and started the race 7th. After the race he expressed in the post-race interview that he was disappointed that it was a shortened race and didn’t get to complete the full race. He was upset not just because he was 2nd and wasn’t able to win and possibly could have won the race, it was also because he wanted the fans and everyone involved in the tour series to be able to enjoy the last few laps of excitement that probably would have happened if they went back to green. “This is probably this biggest disappointment, I’ve wrecked here on lap one, I’ve wrecked here battling for the win, I’ve also been the GOAT, I wrecked a guy in 2015 for a win. On a day like today I think the modifieds deserve the respect to finish the race, I don’t care how long it would have taken them to fix the wall. I think the schedule should have been changed.”

Chase Dowling finished the race 3rd, he started the race 8th and had a fast car, he kept it in the top 10 for the race. He stayed quiet for most of the race and then after the competition caution came out, he seemed to be in let’s go mode and was in up in the front running for the lead all the way till the caution/red flag when they ended the race. Dowling also expressed in his frustration with cutting the race short in his post-race interview. “We don’t come here to finished 2nd, 3rd, just for the fun of it, just kind of a disappointment to finish the race like that.”

Top 5 finishers of the race:
1. Ron Silk
2. Doug Coby
3. Chase Dowling

5. Matt Swanson

The next race for the NWMT is the Stafford 150 at Stafford Motor Speedway on August 2nd.
